South Whidbey Record - 7/14/2018

A former desert dweller and military veteran is the new head of the Port of South Whidbey.

Port commissioners announced Tuesday they hired Stan Reeves as the new executive director to replace Angi Mozer who's moving to Australia. He starts July 16.

Reeves, who grew up in the Northwest and attended the University of Washington, most recently lived in Phoenix working for the private sector.

"My wife grew up in Olympia," Reeves said. "We finally decided to to come back to Washington."

Reeves served 22 years in the U.S. Army and National Guard. His work experience includes financial and program management.

"Stan has an extensive military service career as a U.S. Army officer, with a broad range of leadership positions requiring extensive technical and managerial skills," said Ed Halloran, one of three elected port commissioners. "Stan has also worked in industry as a project and operations manager utilizing his skills in business development and financial management."

Halloran said commissioners were immediately impressed by Reeves' credentials.

Following face to face interviews, "he was seen as skilled, personable and anxious for the opportunity to work for the Port," Halloran said.

The Port of South Whidbey provides and maintains public facilities to marine areas. It also works toward economic development and environmental preservation and development of recreational opportunities.

The executive director's responsibilities include the overall operation of the port district, risk management, short and long-term planning and overseeing a four-person staff and $1.2-million budget.

In the job announcement, annual salary is listed at $75,000 with a $500 monthly stipend to assist with healthcare costs.

Reeves said he looks forward to getting out among the people and places of South Whidbey.

"A real opportunity to get involved in the community attracted me to the position," he said. "Also, to have the type of job where there's an outdoor element to it."

Mozer is moving Down Under with her family because of a Navy transfer. Her husband, Lt. Chris Mozer, is a naval flight officer in the EA-18G Growler unit.

The Port of South Whidbey began in 1961 as the Langley Port District to create a year-round boat maria and harbor at Langley.

It now owns and maintains Bush Point Boat Ramp, Possession Beach Waterfront, Clinton Beach, Pier, Dock and Park and Humphrey Road Ferry Parking Lot.

It also owns three other parks and boat ramps that are maintained by Island County.

Island County Fairgrounds and Campgrounds is also under the Port district's jurisdiction. It maintains the property and buildings of the fairgrounds but doesn't oversee the Whidbey Island Fair.

That four-day event, July 19-22, is operated by the Island County Fair Association.
