State Veterans committee to meet in Thoreau

The Gallup Independent - 8/31/2017

GRANTS - The New Mexico Legislature'sMilitary & Veterans Affairs Interim Committee will hold its August meeting in Thoreau next week.

State Rep. Harry Garcia, D-District 69, said the committee will meet 9 a.m.-4 p.m.Aug. 25 at the Thoreau Chapter House.

Garcia serves on the committee along with local lawmakers, Sen. John Pinto and Rep. Eliseo "Lee" Alcon.

"I've worked really hard to get this done in Thoreau because it has never been done in that part of the country," Garcia said. "It's very, very important that veterans in Gallup and all the surrounding areas - Grants, Acoma, Laguna, Navajo - try to attend this meeting and express their concerns and needs to the board."

In addition to the 22-member committee, Alan Martinez, deputy secretary of the New Mexico Department of Veterans Services; Dale Movius, state Benefits and Services director; Mitchell Lawrence, Healthcare Coordination Program manager; Jonathan Nez, vice president of the Navajo Nation; and John Garcia, district director of the U.S. Small Business Administration for the New Mexico District Office, are expected to attend.

"There are a lot of veterans that are not getting the services they require, like medical, dental, transportation to get to their appointments - there are a lot of issues," Garcia said. "If the veterans show up in force to the meeting, we have some more muscle power to get something done about it."
