Disabled American Veterans chapter opens in Bladen County

Bladen Journal - 8/25/2017

Aug. 23--ELIZABETHTOWN -- Bladen County's disabled veterans now have an official organization working on their behalf.

On Aug. 11, the Robert Curtis Hester Chapter -- a group of disabled veterans -- received word that it has been incorporated as a nonprofit organization under the Disabled American Veterans organization. The new Bladen County chapter joins the almost 1,300 others nationwide with almost 1.3 million members.

"It really means a lot to us to be approved by DAV," commented David Brown, the listing agent for the articles of incorporation. "Now we'll be able to get out there and do a lot of things we couldn't do beforehand."

Founded in 1920, DAV is a nonprofit charity dedicated to helping veterans of all generations and their families. The organization provides more than 670,000 rides for veterans attending medical appointments and assists veterans with more than 292,000 claims annually. In 2016 alone, DAV secured more than $4 billion in new and retroactive benefits for veterans and their families.

Other membership benefits include savings on Ford and Lincoln vehicles, as well as reimbursements up to $1,000 toward the cost of adaptive equipment, USAA insurance and credit card eligibility, job fairs and job placement services, roadside assistance, and tire and moving service discounts.

The organization is perhaps best known, however, for its help getting veterans to appointments, and Brown said it will be the new chapter's first order of business now that it has been incorporated.

"DAV will pay for a van that can be used to transport vets to vet hospitals, so we're working on that right now," Brown remarked. "This will really be a whole different ballgame for veterans in Bladen County."

DAV meets the third Tuesday of every month at the VFW at 7 p.m. Membership is open to veterans who have been disabled during service. For further information, visit www.dav.org or contact David Brown at 910-740-6312.
