CHESTERTOWN - The National Alliance on Mental Illness recently started Family Support Groups in Queen Anne's and Kent counties.

According to a news release, these are peer-led groups for family members, caregivers and loved ones of individuals living with mental illness. Support group members can gain insight from the challenges and successes of other group members facing similar circumstances, the release states.

NAMI offers its Family Support Program from 7 to 8:30 p.m. the first and third Monday of the month in Centreville and the first and third Tuesday of the month in Chestertown. For more information, contact 443-480-0565 or namikentandqueenannes@gmail.com.

Family members or friends of someone with mental illness can find from the support group that they are not alone and that they can find the support they need from the group, the release states.

The family support group follows a structured model, so that everyone has the opportunity to be heard and to get the information and support they need. The support groups are free, confidential and led by people who have loved ones with mental illness.

According to the release, the group will encourage empathy, productive discussion and a sense of community. Members may benefit through others' experiences, discover inner strengths and learn how to identify and use local resources, the release states.
