I have a 24 year old son with this illness. He is very high functioning and we had to fight every step of the way forward services forward him. There Wasn't much support for him growing up. The services just weren't available. He was misdiagnosed for 10 years. Hospitalized 20 times in a 8 year period. Never mind the subaccutes and partial hospitalizations. Attended school with conduct disorder kids and runaways and abused kids. Nick didn't belong at those types of schools. Well all that has passed and Nick graduated 2 years ago from a Autistic High School. Now it's time to work and it's almost impossible to get him help for looking and landing a job and to try to get his drivers license. They have a lot of programs now for the younger kids so they don't fall through the cracks growing up. But what about these young adults that need a lot more support because they did not receive it when they were youngsters. My son is one of them. We need assistance and don't know where to find it. Now I am on disability because I couldn't take good care of myself raising my son because I didn't have not one support system around to help. I am just lost and can't find any help. This will be another horrible and depressing holiday season. No food for holiday dinners sand no gifts for my son or myself. I can't remember the last time I bought something for myself that was not a true necessity for daily living. God please give me strength.
